HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Al Saud

HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Al Saud

Wealth (US$ billion)            20
Country of Residence           Saudi Arabia
Industry                                   Banking & Finance
Companies                              Kingdom Holding Company
For the seventh successive year, HRH Prince Alwaleed tops our annual rich list.

We have again assessed his wealth in five separate areas: first, the publicly traded stocks, which all fall under Kingdom Holding Company. Second, the major companies outside KHC (namely Rotana and LBC). Third is the prince’s real estate. Fourth, other major assets valued (a large chunk of this is the value of his transportation assets including planes and cars).

The rest is made up by his jewellery collection, his investment in a French port and his stakes in Lebanese and Palestinian companies. The fifth part of his wealth is held entirely in cash deposited at various banks. Taking into account the latest market values of Kingdom Holding, and an appreciation in the value of many of his key assets, we now place a figure of $20.4bn on his total wealth. This figure has been verified by his private office.

It should also be noted that HRH has donated close to $3bn during his career to good causes, and through his foundation he is now one of the world’s most prolific philanthropists.

But it is on the business stage where he is still best known. Today, Kingdom Holding Company, of which he owns 95 percent, covers 39 investments in seven sectors. It is the largest foreign investor in the US, with stakes in the likes of News Corporation, Time Warner, Apple and Citi. Regionally, major players from Samba Financial Group to Savola all have the KHC stamp on their shareholdings. With Q2 profits this year up 50 percent to $36m, the prince has no shortage of satisfied customers. Now 55 years old, the prince shows no signs of slowing down. His latest move late in 2010 was the decision to take a 1 percent stake for $500m in General Motors during the US auto giant’s IPO.

So what keeps him going? During an exclusive interview with Arabian Business two months ago, he explained: “There’s no limit for success. Success is achievement, grow your business and plough back some of your benefits to improve the lives of people, it’s a cycle… There is no top. The moment you reach the top you go downhill. If you reach the top of the hill what happens next? You have to go down. I’m not planning to go down. As far as I am concerned, you can never reach the top of the hill.”
